Detector response too slow, or drifting with ambient temperature?
The problem usually traces back to the LiTaO3 material itself, not the circuit design. We supply lithium tantalate single crystal wafers for pyroelectric detection.
Response Speed and Stability Pull in Opposite Directions
The material's Curie temperature, environmental stability, and wafer thickness set the ceiling on both.
What determines response speed
Thinner pyroelectric elements generally respond faster to a real IR signal. This matters most in applications where a delayed trip means a missed event — flame detection, gas leak alarms, motion sensing. A detector that's too slow to trip on a real flame signature, or too sensitive and false-triggers on sunlight or hot equipment, fails at the one job it has.
What determines stability
A higher Curie temperature and stronger environmental stability keep the pyroelectric response consistent as ambient conditions shift. This matters most where drift shows up directly as measurement error — thermometry, continuous industrial monitoring. Consistent, repeatable readings across a wide operating range matter more here than raw trip speed.
Four Applications, Different Points on the Same Trade-Off
Each application sits at a different point between prioritizing speed and prioritizing stability.
Flame & Gas Detection
A detector too slow on a real flame signature — or too sensitive and false-triggering on sunlight or hot equipment — fails at its one job. Thin elements respond fastest.
Motion & PIR Sensors
Consumer and security sensors need to reliably distinguish a person moving through the field from ordinary ambient drift. Material consistency keeps sensitivity predictable at scale.
Industrial Gas Sensing
Sensors run continuously in variable-temperature environments, where drift can mean missed detections. Environmental stability is what keeps calibration holding in the field, not just on the bench.
Non-Contact Thermometry
Measurement equipment needs stable, repeatable readings — drift in the sensing element shows up directly as measurement error. A high Curie temperature keeps response stable across a wider range.
LiTaO3 Wafer Specifications
What we currently produce, and what to confirm before you place an order.
Match diameter to your device size and production volume before ordering — larger diameters generally make more economic sense at higher volumes.
Standard scratch/dig spec across our production line, sufficient for standard pyroelectric detector fabrication.
Standard for all wafers we ship.
Pyroelectric devices typically need poled material — confirm with us whether poled LiTaO3 is available at your target thickness before ordering, as it's not standard on every wafer we ship. Ask about poled material →
Response speed generally correlates with element thickness. Have your target thickness ready when you reach out so we can confirm feasibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you supply poled LiTaO3 wafers ready for pyroelectric detectors?
Poling for pyroelectric applications is handled as a processing request beyond our standard wafers. Contact us with your specification and we'll confirm feasibility.
Does thinner material really respond faster?
Generally, yes — detector response speed tends to correlate with element thickness. Confirm your target thickness with us before ordering.
Is LiTaO3 the only material you offer for infrared sensing?
LiTaO3 is our primary material for this application. For other uses of our materials, see SAW Filters & RF Front-End.
What diameter LiTaO3 wafers are available?
3", 4", and 6" diameter, consistent with our standard LiTaO3 production line.
